Internet of Things (IoT): All You Need to Know

Internet of Things (IoT): All You Need to Know

IoT or the internet of things is a relatively new phenomenon used to describe the network of physical objects, as in ‘things’, that are implanted with software, sensors, and other connectivity technologies. In that sense, it encompasses everything - little or big - that is connected to the internet.

In its most specific use, the internet of things or IoT is increasingly being used to refer to objects and items that can communicate with each other. A simple example can be a smartphone, wearables, and a smart sensor - all connected via internet connectivity.

Applications of the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things is still at its fancy, with tech innovators and researchers experimenting with different applications. The everyday items that are part of the IoT initiative include smart toasters, smart toothbrushes, dog’s fitness collars, rectal thermometers, and whatnot!

Not to mention the smart bulbs, refrigerators, TVs, and speakers that you already made an integral part of your life. The innovations in the consumer tech sectors are rapid, and it’s not far away when the entire home would be connected via the internet of things.

Until now, there are three distinct categories of the internet of things focusing on the specific industry they are operating in. They are the Internet of Military Things, Industrial Internet of things, wireless sensor networks. Each of these sectors can reshape the future of human societies, with the industrial internet of things having the potential to cause the fourth industrial revolution.

To conclude, just because everything can be connected to the internet via a sensor, it doesn’t mean it has to be. So, the purpose of the internet of things still needs to be scrutinised on a case by case basis. You should also pay extra attention to privacy and security measures in place before opting to buy an IoT appliance.
