How do International Calling Cards Work?

How to Get an International Calling Card

The first step to get an international calling card is obtaining one. There are many places these cards are sold at. If you have access to a computer, these cards can be purchased online at your convenience. You can also get them at drug stores and convenience stores. They are sold in the isle where you'll find other prepaid cards. If you have purchased one in the past, you can reload them without going to the store. This can be done by calling the number on the card and requesting a refill, and using a credit card to add a balance.

How to Set up a Card

Setting up an international calling card isn’t as complicated as it used to be. Just 20 years ago these cards needed to be set up by a representative of some sort and were given out by travel agents. Now, setup is as easy as buying the card. When checking out at the store the clerk will ask how much you want to put on the card. You choose the amount, and then the balance is added. Then, you will be given a receipt which you will need to keep. The card will have a PIN number on there already, so setup will be complete.

How to Avoid Extra Fees

Some calling card companies will charge extra fees to either use or reload these cards. The fees can be sneaky and add up if you aren’t watching carefully. It is best to avoid any card that has you put a credit card on file without taking a look at the fine print. The reason some companies have you add a card is if you go over your minutes. Some will charge you a fee per call, or even additional fees for extended calls. When you are choosing a card company, take a hard look at the fees as some are reasonable but some can be expensive.

How to Make a Call

Once you have purchased a card and are aware of the extra fees, it’s time to make a call. You can use any phone to make it including a pay phone and a cell phone. If you use a cell phone, you may be subjected to extra costs. Then you will call the number on the back of the calling card and add your PIN number. Through the call, you will dial the number you want to reach. Once they accept the call, the balance will begin being deducted from your calling card. It is a very simple process once a card is purchased.

Calling Card Alternatives

Most people believe that because of the internet calling cards are not needed. However, that isn’t true. There are countries that have blocked social media networks. In some countries WIFI isn’t available, so your computer won’t be able to connect. It might also happen that once you do get a connection it will be too slow to communicate with a family member or friend. Due to these factors, there currently aren’t any viable alternatives to an international calling card, so if you plan to leave the country, be sure to take one of these just in case.
